Found this guy a few months ago, less than twenty quid for the OEM little hourmeter which lets you see how many hours the engine has actually done
http://www.akspeedo.com/vdo-lcd-repair.php
I originally fitted a voltage driven hour meter which has done me proud for the last few years but this one shows the original cumulative hours.
After twenty years I wondered how many hours my VP MD22 had really done! Today was the day I found out! How many does the panel think?

I reckon at least 2495 hours! How many extra hours were on the other clock Stu?

My engines have done 3500 hours and the boat was only built in 2008. Stu must be well ahead of that, surely? :)

Richard

My 18 year old boat has only 1580 hours on the donk. I suspect that's because it has only a 10 hp and the boat sails a lot better than using the engine at WOT in most conditions.

The grand total was 3250 !
Dont forget with the new screen on it was done as an add on so the tacho still kept counting and the data was stored in the tacho. New genuine screen and it shows what is in memory so the hours should be genuine.

+1 for the link in the OP post - replaced mine, which hadn't been working for 8 years. Now works perfectly. 3456 hours! Took 20 minutes to do the repair and it was dead easy.

Hi Stu,

Any more info re fitting etc?

My poxy Yanmar hour meter disappeared from view the day of haul-out. 6 years old and less than 300 hours.

Thanks to an earlier thread started by Steve, my tacho is now hibernating, wrapped up nice and warm in my airing cupboard. Hopefully, my early failure will dry out over winter and burst into life again next March.

It would be nice to have a Plan B.

Call the bloke, he is easy to talk to. If they are the same, easy peasy job, if you want , Ill do it for you

fitted one of those last year, not difficult, need a small screwdriver.
but does not agree with the hour reading from VP ??
My only true reading is from the tacho which when powered up reads off the engine alternator, even when the display isnt working the chip in the tacho still collects the data

Thanks for the link, just ordered one. Tried getting one direct from China last year but that one never arrived.
Im going to order a couple more to carry on board so any peeps I meet, I can do the biz for them! The price is certainly right!

Just checked, they are the same. Buy one and you can send to me and Ill do it although its that easy you can do it yourself.

Hi Stu, I spoke to the guy this morning, very approachable, helpful and informative. I’ve now sent my tacho to him to fit the replacement. Very reasonable cost, not worth doing myself but many thanks for your offer, albeit I’ve only just now read it:)

Ive just bought a 1991 boat with the original Yanmar 3GM 30 engine with no hours meter fitted (ever, I think). Will one of these devices be able to tell me how many hours this engine has done, or is it only for engines that had an hours-meter fitted originally but which has broken?

Edit: Ah, I see - these are to replace a digital hours-run display that forms part of the tacho/control panel, yes?

Just swapped ours today, fit perfectly. Now we finally know the real engine hours (we've counted our own, but the display never worked in my ownership, so had no idea how many previous owners had done). Turns out I did the timing belt change at roughly the right interval :D
