Genoa UV strip replacement

Anybody tried replacing their furling genoa UV strips and if so
how successful and where can I get the material to do the job?

Did ours last year.

Best if you unpick the old stitching, then find someone with a suitable heavy duty sewing machine, (we have a liveaboard with one just a few marina berths away).

Any sail maker or loft will be able to supply the material.

what about getting a seperate canvas cover.

but you can get some lovely ones made up in canvas from a local sailmaker for about the same price.

If you want cheaper then if you google it there are some companies who make off the shelf versions which may work out chaper.

Unopicking the old one is a messy job...do it when SWIMBO is out and clean up quick.

Have now got a sail without the sac.strip and use a genoa sock...way better. The sail sets better and I can get the sock up/down easily.

had ours done last year on our old No1 to make it last a few more years. leech was fraid etc.

Seem to recall £300-400 for a 15m odd leech.

Easy repair. belive the biggest cost was the material.

I was hoping to get 'her' to do the whole thing, unpicking and re-sewing have approx 10m luff and 5m foot. (May not be worth the grief) If we take it off the sail is going to look tatty so not sure the sock will work that well. Good ideas though. Looks like my local sailmaker may end up getting the job after all.

I've just done mine, got the material from Kayospruce, was advised to use 'Odyssey' material. Took ages to unstitch the old strip - found THREE layers of UV strip!! I used double sided tape(Venture Tape - Kayospruce) to fix the strip before sewing. Don't try and do it in one long strip, use several shorter lengths, it's much easier. Make it slightly wider so you don't use the same thread holes. I have an industrial zig-zag sewing machine so it was easy but a domestic machine will do except for the thick layers near the clew etc. Make sure you use a bonded polyester thread(Kayospruce). Good Luck! PS - If you can persuade Kayospruce to supply you as 'trade', you'll save a lot of money!!
