I want to fit a generator to my 40 foot flybridge. I ususally see Onan or Kholer generators in boats of this size, but its not really an area where product comparisons are easy. Does anyone have any views on how to select? My current thinking is around 4-5 KVA will be fine.

When I fitted heating, Krueger were absoutely outstanding in every respect including price - can anyone recommend a similar distributor for the supply and fitting of the genny.

Oddly enough if anyones got a rec for a holding tank supplier+fitter that would ease my congestion too....

thanks in advance!

Most Brit boat builders fit HFL generators http:// http://www.fischerpanda.com/
Unless you've got budget or space constraints though, I would think about going bigger than 4-5Kva depending on where you are going to position the generator. Most generators of this size have single cylinder diesel engines which are inherently noisy and vibey. If you have an aft cabin boat, then the gennie will probably have to go in the engine bay under the saloon or under the aft cabin bed and even the quitest gennie will be intrusive here. It will be less of an issue if you have an aft cockpit boat as the gennie can go in the lazarette. 6Kva gennies or bigger generally have twin cylinder engines which are much smoother and quieter so if you can run to one of these, it would be less intrusive. Also, another point to consider is the load you intend to put on the gennie. If you think you might ever fit aircon, you will need at least 6Kva

All agreed, and your location matters too - there is good service back up for HFL in UK but I believe not in France, frexample

Kohler, in particular, and Onan widely used in the US. Suggest min 7kW if you have dual air con, electric hob, kettle, micro etc.

What about good old Beta Marine; they do lorra, lorra gensets (but they don't make much fuss about them.

Certainly they are competition for Onan - could be cheaper too, but not less quality.

Put them on the list; approachable peeps.
