General speedo question

The speedo drive mechanism on my maxum bowrider was disconnected and removed when I did some work on it a couple of years ago. The speedo gauge is still in situ. Will ANY paddle wheel driver work with this , or will it be a specific one for that specific speedo?

I know there may be a few, but on a boaty forum I would be dissapointed to find out it was 'most'.

I guess it would be prudent to stick with the same brand as the head unit.

People sometimes say they were doing a certain speed over ground but when questioned don't know off If was with or against a tide.

What outdrive have you got? The Mercruiser outdrives have a pitot tube built in for the speedo - its just a tube that runs from the outdrive to the speedo, that is the easiest thing to check first.

You can also buy a brand new GPS speedo that is a drop in replacement for your existing speedo if you want. And for the anoraks, it really does not matter that it is SoG in your bowrider. lol.

Speed through the water being greater or less than SOG tells you the speed at which the tide is running which is useful on a tidal river or if aproacing a pontoon on a tidal harbour and informative even at sea.

As someone who has a paddle wheel but has changed all the display to sog ( i am in the med ) a question. Does it ?

The things are in my experience so variable due to fouling as to be very unreliable other than when totally clean and just calibrated - hence mine are no longer displayed
