Gelcoat repair on a vertical surface?

Hi,
I finished up using some mylar sheet, from an old ring binder, where it had been used as a separator.
It sort of worked, I applied the gelcoat, and as quickly as I could and slid the mylar on. I could then manipulate the gelcoat and work it back up hill through the mylar sheet with my fingers and securing it with a lot of masking tape.
I left it overnight and it cured without a sticky surface. However, the gelcoat had run down from the upper part of the repair.
I've tidied up the repair, but not to the stage where I can polish it, using 420 grit wet and dry.
I've applied a second batch of gelcoat, which was much easier because there's now a lot less volume to fill. Then applied mylar and masking tape.
It has to stay like that until the 3rd of April when can get back to the boat again.
It seems probable that I'll need a third coat, but I'll get there in the end.
Thank for the help, and the entertainment ;).
Cheers
Ian

From post #1 "I'd like to repair it with gelcoat,."

How more definitive do you need it to be ?
Not part of the title, which you specifically referred to in your original snippy comment, "Try reading the thread title" and I accordingly specifically referenced in my pedantic response.

Words have meaning
