I have a Volvo Penta Ms4 gerabox fitted on my boat, how often should the gearbox oil be changed.

Well the manual says annually, at least it does for mine, although the previous owner of my boat didn't change it once in the 10 years he owned it!
It did come out a bit black and gritty,
but doesn't seem to have had any major detrimental effects as far as I can tell. I've changed it annually just to flush it out since then!
The hard copy manual that came with the boat says use EP80W90 or EP90 GL5, but when I looked online the other day the latest VP manual seems to recommend using Mobil synthetic SHC 75W90 or something.
