How do you tell which is forr"d? Gearbox lever on top and pushed foreward?( but maybe the lever should hang down) The higher gear ratio will be ahead? (Arona box)

Generally, if the gearbox is direct drive, that is there is no inbuilt reduction gear then the output rotation will be the same as the engine. However, if the gearbox has a reduction gear built into it, then the output will be reversed, the exception being Volvo MS type gearboxes. Generally gearboxes which use planetary gears do not reverse the rotation.

So first thing you need to do is put the engine in either gear and slowly turn the engine exactly one revolution (with fuel turned off) Check the movement of the output shaft to see how much it turn and in what direct, then move the lever to the other position and repeat. This will tell you if there is any reduction gear built in.

Hopefully that will lead you to deciding which position is reverse. You should note that not all gearboxes are suitable for continuous operating in both fwd and rev.
