I have a Steyr diesel with a Bravo 1 leg. New engine with leg overhauled in May of 2009. Was all ok until about a month ago but now I have to put into gear and keep moving the throttle before the forward gear is selected. The revs being sometimes at more than tick over this in close quarter manoeuvres is a bit hairy to say the least. Reverse selection is fine and appears as it should be.

Is it just a case of cable adjustment or is there something more involved? if just cable adjustment would that be at the leg end or the gear shift lever end? I have it booked into the marine engineers the end of the coming week but thought if it was simple and with some instruction from here I might look myself and save some pennies

All thoughts appreciated

Could be the shift is biased more towards reverse than forward so it selects late on forwards, simple adjustment in motor room on gear shift quadrant, there is a special tool to ensure its correct but often its easier to do it by hand to make sure it has equal throw.
If its not that then it could be the clutch is slipping, you can try removing the glaze with grinding paste but this is not for DIY unless you know about drives.
Worst case you need a new clutch if its worn out.

Disconnect the cable on the selector quadrant and pull/push the cable by hand and see what the time delay is on engagement.

That way you will know if the cable has been set up correctly as in neutral the cable should mate back up with the cable/lever from the helm.

Another issue if the cone is slipping is that who ever installed it didnt set up the cable to the correct setting for forward gear and the cone has slipped and worn because it not fully engaged to forward travel.

Just an update on this one.

Engineer tried adjustment but then decided the cone clutch was at fault. So a new cone clutch was duly fitted and all is wonderful again :) except for the thickness of my wallet

Does the expense of boating ever wain....don't answer that I know the answer
