need it to stay upright as the boat rolls around
the struts i am offered are like 50N plus, so two would support about 10kg ?

is that how it works ?

can't seem to find any that are about 45cm extended ....

Look at SGS, they do adjustable force stainless struts, and they'll have a 45cm version. I've used them before, good supplier.

Just bought a pair of gas struts ( 520N!) from them for GF's Saab 900 tailgate

You need to do some geometry - if you want them to slowly lower the hatch to closed, or even gently open as you release the handles you'll need an awful lot more than 50N.
