Gas regulators yet again

Prompted by a comment on the forum a week or so ago I had a look at the caravanning pages of the calor gas site to see what new regulations were on the way, and was wondering if anyone would like to speculate on their application to boats

The only thing you will have to watch fromm 2004 is when buying a new cooker/burner if it complies with the new regs you will have to change your govenor to siut.Can,t see manufactures catering for the marine industry separatly.

I find this very confusing! Surely caravan users like boat users travel abroad regularly now and interchange gas supplies (especially Calor to Gaz) as required, I know we do. So what is changing to bring the UK in line with the rest of Europe? Many if not nearly all of the boats supplied in the UK now are built in mainland Europe notably France/Germany and therefore come fitted with 'European' cookers or are these special 'UK' ones?

They are doing it so that they can rip us off a bit more. the usual thing, they think the british won't realise whats going on, and you can guarantee there wont be much complaining as most people will just pay up without question.

Like Robin. I find this confusing. THe "new" pressure setting for butane is 30 mb which is only 2 more than the previous one. Given that regulators have a tolerance as have appliances, I cannot see this making much difference, i.e. appliances ought to tolerate either setting whether they are old or new. It is different for propane however as the website link seems to suggest a 7mb reduction in pressure.

On a different thread it was suggested that Calor will phase out he 4.5kg cylinder. This would create big problems for a lot of owners as gas lockers are designed to accept this size and will not readily accept the larger one. The reason quoted was that Calor do not make money on refilling these 4.5 kg cylinders. This I find hard to believe. at approx £9 a go, the gas costs £2 per kilo. Compare this with autogas at about 40 pence per kilo! OK autogas is either propane or propane/butane mix and is a pertol by-product but there is still a factor of 5 of a cost ratio.

Many years ago, I lived in a British caravan with gas lighting and a 1960's Flavel cooker, not unlike many I've seen on boats. I used it in France, with local regulators and bottles of butane and propane. I had no idea they were supposed to be incompatible, and nor had my lights or cooker - No problems.
