Recently visited a Calor Gas depot to exchange a couple of 904 canisters. Then just yesterday thought I'd call at the local caravan shop to inquire as to their prices. Surprised to find they would have charged me a good ten per cent less.

Price could have increased since they last had a delivery I suppose, but I expected Calor would have been the best to obtain from?

The real rip off is the difference in price for the same gas between Calor and Gaz. By the same I really do mean the same as both cylinder types are quite literally filled from the same bulk tank, but the Gaz version just costs more than twice as much. We switched our last boat from the original Gaz to Calor. Using current prices at our YC marina the Gaz 907 2.5kg costs £20 versus a Calor 4.5kg at just £16. That makes the Gaz price £8 per kg versus Calor at £3.56 2.25 times as much.

We replaced two Gaz with two Calor, but retained one Gaz with an adapter valve to fit the Calor tube fitting in case we needed to replace one in France where an exchange for Calor isn't available. We paid for the new regulator, Calor to Gaz adapter and connection hoses with the first refills, but we did have the basic Calor cylinders 'in stock'.

I always bring my bottles home to exchange at my local garden centre... it's about a fiver cheaper.

I see that you're in Gosport. Hattons in Hilsea were always the cheapest in the area and they'll usually put it on their little truck round.

I've never actually checked that, past noticing that Gaz has escalated in price! Thanks. I guess that Gaz is cheaper in France?

Not so you would notice! They are one and the same company these days I think in the UK at least though which one owns which I don't know. The problem on many boats is that many gas locker sizes are not big enough for Calor although our last boat (Jeanneau) locker had space in fact for two Calor and two Gaz.

OK. I think the Bene would take two Calor bottles. I'll check it and the cost of a regulator. Might mean that the outboard fuel wld have to go elsewhere. Though I'm never sure whether it's a good idea to have it in there anyway?

Robin, I could have written that! It is exactly what we have done, I think we are geniuses! ;)

We sell refill 907's for £17 and refill 904's for £15.75. However, if you don't have an empty it'll cost you £78 for a 907 and £76 for a 904!! Always go for calor gas if you can, loads cheaper.

Much cheaper in France and what is more the GRP red canisters of 10kg don't mark the decks, are ligter and you can see the level. A good reason to go over once in a while.

I use Bright Spark stoves which take disposable 220g cylinders. The gas works out at £4.60 per kg. That shows how much of a rip-off Gaz is!

It's good to know who you're doing business with

Johnson Controls http://www.johnsoncontrols.com/publish/us/en.html owns, amongst rather a lot of other businesses, Coleman which seemingly owns Camping Gaz

Calor gas is european being owned by SHV holdinhs http://www.shv.nl/

SHV originated in 1896 in the Netherlands from a merger between a number of large coal trading companies, some of which had been active since the 18th century. After the decline of coal as the primary source of energy, halfway through the twentieth century, SHV decided to move into other business areas.

SHV's activities now involve:

trade in and distribution of LPG (SHV Energy)
cash and carry wholesale (Makro)
provision of private equity (NPM Capital)
exploration and production of oil and gas (Dyas)
investment in sustainable energy solutions (The Clean Energy Company)
heavy lifting and transport solutions (Mammoet)
industrial services (ERIKS)

SHV is a privately-held family company.

Calor gas did purchase the UK Camping Gaz franchise.
