Hi,

I've got a gas fitting I want to undo but don't have a spanner for (see pic below). It's not to hand atm so can anyone tell me what size the nut is likely to be ? A web search throws up 25mm, 27mm and 30mm but can anyone take a guess at which it is likely to be ? I tried a set of swan neck adjustable pliers last time but failed miserably to move it, not helped by my forgetting it's a LH thread :o

Also failed to get the plastic bung out of the new cylinder (same problem as above :o), Anyone any ideas for removing it now ? All I can think of is drilling a hole crosswise into the bung and trying to shift it with a tommy bar...

Thanks,

Boo2

Propane POL connectors need a 30mm spanner, same size as for a butane connector.

Thanks for that. I do even have a 30mm spanner too, surprisingly, so I'll take that with me. I may try molies on the plastic cap before drilling it...

Before you butcher the plastic cap try some WD40 on the thread. Same with the connector on the old cylinder. Wait a bit for the oil to penetrate then use a decent adjustable spanner with a long handle. You could try tapping the end of the handle with a mallet to get it started, not forgetting it's a lefthand thread.

Statement of the obvious but you do know it's a left hand thread don't you?
Applies to both
On a metal fitting if it has cuts in the brass then it's a left handed!

Yes, I had (eventually) remembered it's a LH thread. As a matter of interest, can anyone tell me the reason gas bottles and fittings utilise LH threads ?

Well, glad to say that a proper 30mm spanner had the nut undone with no bother, ditto the molies on the plug. Shows how useless swan neck pliers are, will have to ditch those...

Thanks for all the replies,
