Gas Alarm

When I switch on battery power my gas alarm continually sounds instead of sounding for a minute and then switching off.I have to go through the process of turning off/on battery power 3 or 4 times until eventually I get a minute of alarm sounding and then blessed silence ! Any thoughts on why and how to remedy would be appreciated.

Gas in the bilge? Or more likely a knackered sensor.

If ventilation of the area does not cure this suspect a defective sensor, as already suggested'

You don't say what make of alarm you have but Envin recommend that the sensors on their "Pilot" gas alarms be replaced every 2 years

Mine's a Pilot and it does that every time. It's OK cruising but if it's been left off for a few days it beeps. The longer it's been off, the longer it takes to rectify itself. I've actually fitted an on/off push button next to it so I can keep turning it off and on until it shuts up. I have to get it to shut up because it's linked to an automatic solenoid cut off switch so if it's beeping I don't get any gas.

The pilot gas alarm sensors are too sensitive to everything. under arm spray,hair spray(her fault), kitchen cleaner spray, carpet adhesive any sort of aerosol or even a "water" spray thingy. you have exactly the same symptoms as weve had a couple of times and it did my head in the number of times we had to switch isolator off and on(20 minutes sometimes). 100% replace sensor head and spray stuff outside.

I accidentally left the battery and alarm on when my boat was ashore and locked up for a few weeks and the alarm didn't go off even with no ventilation. It seems the lack of power over a period of time is significant.

we also had that symptom. ours is an old bmc 1.5 with the associated oil leaks,smells and the "old boat diesel stink" when we first get onboard. thats started the alarm sometimes.
