Three weeks ago I launched the boat in which I had installed a new Garmin 188c plotter / sounder. First trip out the sounder section went faulty. I tried all around the marina to find another boat with a compatable transducer so the display unit could be tested. No success, so I didn't know which was problamatic, the display or the transducer. I phoned Garmin who told me to send the display back they would test it and return it, either confirmed ok or with the problem sorted. I phoned today and was told to expect a three week turnaround. Very usefull when I have a trip organised starting on 11th July. The annoying thing is that I used the hole which housed my old transducer for the new one so I cannot revert back to the olde faithfull nasa sounder without lifting out. So BALLS to Garmin service. GRRRR. I suppose I could use a string with a weight tied to it !

Sorry, but my experience with Garmin has been the exact opposite and I know many others here agree.

In any case, the responsibility for this lies initially with your supplier under the Sale of Goods Act and as it is a brand new unit I would be demanding replacement rather than repair.

hi Tony,

Iam sure that there is no probs getting a new unit but all I wanted was to have garmin plug in the display to determine if is is faulty or the transducer. that shouldnt take 3 weeks.

You may be able to use the old transducer and nasa unit temporarily by epoxying sticking it to the inside of the hull or if you want to go to the trouble a short length of plastice tube filled with oil and epoxied to the hull would work

if you bought the plotter from a marine electronics supplier drop it back to them and they should be able to plug it in at the shop and test the display for you.

I have had excellent service from Garmin when my 12XL went wrong replaced within a week, returned to dealer that it was purchased from and he organised the whole thing. Garmin are based in Romsey you could try calling them and see if they could help quicker if you delivered it to them explaining that you are going away.

Yep - I agree with Tony (I cant believe I just said that /forums/images/icons/blush.gif) but I have had a fantastic service from Garmin. Quick turnround - no quibble - I would buy Garmin as first choice every time !!!!

It wouldn't - but they are quoting you their service standard from reciept to your getting it back at the delivery address and whatever the problem.

Given that they normally handle warantee and out of warantee repairs I think that is pretty reasonable - I have had 2 out of warantee replacements for very little financial contribution and have been amazed at their service.

If it's a new unit and doesn't work I would be expecting a replacement from the supplier and would be sitting on his doorway Monday morning - figuratively speaking.

this morning, Monday, 11am. Phoned Garmin to ask if they had tested the unit. nice voice tells me to dial option 3 which is service - no reply . nice voice tells me to hold on and line goes dead. I rang again and nice voice tells me to dial '0' for an operator - operator must have died because no one answered. I tried again at 11.30 and at 12.15 -the phone is still ringing as I type this. And believe me, I am a slow typist or typer or whatever a typing person is refered to. 12.19 still no answer. anyone fancy a pint......12.25......12.30.... Line has just gone dead. this live action is better than football.
