This subject is as complicated or as simple as you want.
I tend to make it far more complex than it has to be.
Maybe this is why I cant find a reset cross track error in Garmin.
Maybe I'm expecting too much from it.

There’s an option in the settings menu to calculate routes from waypoint or boat.

Mines set to boat......not sure if it will help with scenario

That might be worth looking into.

Interesting.
I didn't remember that thread.
It seems that Whitelighter has the same concerns as me.
But JFM did post in that thread saying this:

Garmin does have XTE. Hard to guess but easy when you get hang of.

It may be that Garmin have added a reset XTE to their later kit.
I certainly couldn't find it on the plotters that I was using.
IIRC they were GPSMAP 5000 models - touch screen.
