Has anyone used one of these, thinking of buying one for the car and occasional use on the boat.

Any feedback welcome. Also if you know of any alternatives which can be used for in car gps I would be interested to hear about them.

TIA

Dell have just joine up with a major GPS/positioning system to offer a package on the Axim X3 try http://www.routeplanners.co.uk/index.php?cPath=76
and before anyone asks yes I work for Dell but the product still looks good value.

I have one its a great device. Make sure you get a large memory card with it 256 mb or better to hold the maps and give you some space for music for example.

Main drawback is the short battery life.. a couple of hours, so you'll need a 12 volt charger. also not weather resistant so careful on the boat.

I have only used the navigator on land, and it is pretty good. Directing me to nearest petrol station once when low on fuel. As for the turn by turn directioons, so far they haven't sent me the wrong way yet.

Strongly recommend an external antenna. I got one from teh states from GPS geek fior about $25, compared to £80 garmin wants for theirs.

Also handy on boat as GPS can stay safe and dry while antenna gets wet outside.

The display is great. PDA functions are great as with any plam device.

You can get some interest marine software for it too. tidal stream calcs and so on.

Not bought the blue charts yet, but it has worked well as GPS on the boat.

Thanks Nick, think I'll get one. Where did you buy yours, here or the states?

BTW I've still got that fridge, so if you're passing by at any time let me know and we can arrange for you to pick it up.

I got mine for £500 from GPSworld. Its best not to buy the US one as it doesn't come with the European cartography, which Garmin want $400-500 for.

So unless you already own a copy of City Select CD cartography for Europe, its best to buy over here.

I think they are starting to discount it a bit.

And yes that fridge, we still haven't sorted one out .

We are driving down to Cornwall this week. I am doing an interview about South Crofty tin mine. On the way down (Saturday) we could stop by and collect from places along the M4/M5/A30 -- or whatever is convenient for you. Let me know where you'll be Saturday PM and we'll find you!

Cheers!

Nick
