Garmin HomePort...

You can copy your G2 card to another SD card. It won't work in your plotter as the security/anti-piracy sector won't get transferred, but your copy will be fine plugged into a card reader for Homeport. Homeport won't read map data from your hard drive without messing around with card emulators. It is worth copying you G2 card to your hard drive as a backup as, if like me, you accidentally delete the map data from your G2 card you can then copy the data back on. Fortunately the security sector of the G2 card does not get deleted very easily.

I do the similar. Copy of map and routes stored on HDD. Master map card in the drawer. Aux copy map and routes (operational card) in use between boat and home. If I lose or bugga the card, its an easy re-copy and start again. I also have another card to download and load up software updates.

You can used an emulator such as IMDISK to create a virtual drive from hard disk space. You need to copy over the Garmin data each time you reboot though so it is a bit long-winded.

You can use IMDISK to read from a saved copy of the Garmin map on your hard drive. I do - very easy

Do you mean that you can make IMDISK point to and use the data on your hard disk without duplicating it, or does it still copy the data from your hard disk to the virtual disk (elsewhere on your hard disk) every time you boot?

Hope this helps:

1. Save your chart somewhere in a folder on your hard drive.
2. Download and install IMDISK.
3. Create a shortcut to the gmapsupp.img in your chart folder on your hard drive somewhere handy (eg, Desktop), and give it a name you'll remember.
4. Right click on the shortcut and choose 'Mount as ImDisk Virtual Disk'
5. IMPORTANT - tick the checkbox for 'Removeable media' on the bottom right.
6. Open Homeport - and voila!

You'll need to do steps 4 & 5 every time you use it, but it's hardly a chore.

Thanks for clarifying that - I have got IMdisk now and am going to give it a try.

Please let us know how you get on. I tried the steps that Paul kindly supplied but I end up with an empty virtual disk with no Garmin directory or image and hence nothing in Homeport.
