I always thought that someone entering a race had to be a member of a club or alternatively their national authority (eg RYA).....is that no longer the case?

Yes it's still the case but.

1. RYA membership is fine.
2. Only the skipper needs to be a member of anything.

This thread reminds me of a cliquey yacht club .... and why I don't want to belong to one.

In the sense that members of a yacht club do tend to discuss races they've participated in, then yes, it is a bit like a yacht club. Not sure where cliquey comes in though. Flaming is a top Solent racer, I'm a newbie doing my first Hamble Winter Series & very thrilled to have a chance to chat about it online with much more experienced sailors. Sorry if it is annoying other forumites!

I was merely sulking because I also contributed to the thread, including an answer to your question about your overall series, but didn't get so much as an acknowledgement - just like being ignored at a Club bar.

EDIT: well done on your overall victory, BTW.

Really? I can't find it in the RRS, and we don't ask the question on entry forms.

Should have gone to Spec Savers?

From the 2017 version ......
75 ENTERING A RACE
75.1 To enter a race, a boat shall comply with the requirements of the organizing authority of the race. She shall be entered by
(a) a member of a club or other organization affiliated to a World Sailing member national authority,
(b) such a club or organization, or
(c) a member of a World Sailing member national authority.

Funny you should say that.... I spent £300 there two months ago and still can't get on with one of the pairs!

Anyway, I just checked my 2013-16 book and the same paragraph is in there too!

I still don't think we check on entry forms but there again, the NOR and SIs refer to the RRS in total so the competitors are bound by them to comply.

You learn something new everyday around here!

A workaround I've seen quite frequently is to allow temporary membership of the organising club to entrants and crew. Also helps to increase bar takings of said club. Reserve the right to boot them out, e.g. for excessively increasing bar takings.

Thanks, was great to finally get it in the bag - particularly after having to wait an hour to see whether an on-the-water protest was going to be pursued. (Wouldn't actually have made any difference to results - but obviously you can't really relax & celebrate until it's all done.)

And I should add that I did of course appreciate your contribution on the overall series - was very reassuring to have my calculations backed up by not one but TWO independent & knowledgeable sources, gave me the confidence to argue my case against some dissenting opinion yesterday!

It was a good day out on the water yesterday and fine end to the series, despite a Beneteau trying to tow the committee boat away just before the Class 2 start ;) One or two issues from crossing fleets but we mostly avoided trouble
