Garmin GPSMap 556

Hi,
Can anyone please explain the difference between the 556 and the old 555 ?
Unless I am missing something I am unable to see a difference in the advertised spec, other than the price.

check out the spec on the garmin site, i dont think there is to much difference, there could be extra outputs or inputs, but check and compare on the site.

found some info for 555s on;www.mynewcheap.co.uk.have a look but i believe the nmea input/output changed from 0183 to 2000.bought mine new last year for £460 which was a bargain and 2 months later they bought out the 556 variety.cant see many other changes though.http://www.mynewcheap.co.uk/products/details/garmin-gpsmap-555/11578/

The differences are indeed minimal, better support for engine and environmental instruments is about it.

The 555 should be available still for around 600.00 pounds. The 556 should not be any more* as it is the direct replacement in the series.

The sonar capable version of the 555 is (as far as I know) no longer available anywhere, but the 556S is about 650.00.

* Some retailers may be selling off old stock of the 555 on the basis that it is obsolete, but it is not really so there could be a real bargain to be had.
