Garmin GPSMAP 4010 Chartplotter and Chinese GPS Receiver.

Chum had has purchased a Garmin 4010 chartplotter to replace a failed Raymarine E series chartplotter.
The E series was originally connected to a cheapo chinese mushroom receiver, he has been told the existing "aerial" will not work with the replacement Garmin. ???
Looking at the specs his clone GPS receiver and Garmin use NMEA 0183.
Providing we can source a 19 pin nmea cable which will connect to the Garmin chartplotter we should be able to use the existing aerial to get a position.

Pretty sure you will find it has a built in GPS - has he not read the manual which tells him among other things how to get the initial GPS fix?

I have a GPSMAP4008 and a 5008, NONE of them have integrated GPS, same applies to the whole 4XXX and 5XXX series. Pref option is to use a N2K mushroom, but N0183 will work just fine.

If you get the (iirc) blue plug cable you can configure it to use the existing NMEA0183 antenna output.

Absolutely no reason you cannot use any standard NMEA GPS receiver with 4010, It will use 4 wires, 2 for power and two for NMEA.

Magic .. just surprised at number of pins ...

But at end of day 0183 only needs signal and ground ... two pins for each data link..... + of course power
