Morning all.

We'd like to replace our old Rl70C with something modern.

Would a Garmin GPSMAP® plotter interface with my original (2002) Raymarine depth sounder, tridata and autopilot? We already have a SeatalkNG backbone fitted.

Look at the supported communication protocols on the plotters manual online. They normally have pretty good back support for older communications protocols as well as nmea 2000. You can get adapters for the cables

There’ll be one or 2 bits of data it struggles with, but the important stuff should all work. My GPSMap can use data from my 2001 Raymarine log, via the seatalk 1 to stng adapter. I see no reason why wind data wouldn’t work. It’s usually things like waypoint names that don’t translate, which it seems is not going to matter to you.

Yes it will. You will need a SeatalkNG to devicenet (N2K) adaptor cable.

The Echomap range is also worth a look, they come with built in charts and are a fair bit cheaper.

Edit: You will not be able to control the autopilot from the plotter, but that will apply no matter what plotter you install.

The Raymarine plotters are too wide unfortunately.
Pete, i couldn't count the number of Garmin plotters that i have fitted to boats with Raymarine kit. Lots and lots have been fitted to systems including stuff like ST60s etc, with a Seatalk to STNG converter it all just works. Sounds like you may already have the converter ?

Up to a point I agree, but if you remove the ST60 screens in favour of something else the gotcha is calibrating any of the sensors which can be a real pain in some circumstances. I also found both the ST1 converter and the iTC-5 occasionally (not often, but now and then) don't start up quite right and need a reboot, although I never worked out if that was the converters or the B&G acting oddly. My assumption was converters since there are many consumers on the network and all saw the same issues.

I wouldn't let that put anyone off though, and I'd do the same again although possibly with Garmin next time

Hi Paul, we do currently have an E7 and can control the autopilot from that (linked via SeatalkNG).

Would a Garmin not be able to do the same?

This is our current setup:
1) RL70C
2) Raymarine E7 (mounted above dash)
3) New Garmin VHF

All currently connected via SeatalkNG.

I'd like replace the old plotters with Garmin.

As you can seem the horizontal space for the plotter is super tight and the Garmin is slightly narrower than the Axiom 9.

I also like the superb customer service (and effectively unlimited warranty) that you get with Garmin.

Full control of the autopilot from the plotte needs the autopilot and plotter to be from the same manufacturer. Even then, they both need to be of similar vintage and/or running the same software.

If you fitted Garmin plotters you would not be able to engage the autopilot from the plotter. But, you would still be able to select a waypoint or tap the screen and "goto", then engage the autopilot from its own control head.

I agree with the customer service, Garmin is always my first choice when a customer asks for a recommendation.

Hi Pete I can't help with technical stuff but I've got an rl70c and radone I intend to install as a Stand alone radar. (We have a Garmin Echomap but you can't have radar displayed). If you're upgrading, I'd be interested in buying your GPS antenna as I believe they're unique to the rl70. (And rare as rocking horse dung)

Hi Col, I'll let you know but there is a 3rd party GPS mushroom that will work with the RL70C and costs about £80 if that helps.

From a usability perspective, how does the Garmin compare with RayMarine Axiom?
I have always felt that Garmin was more intuitive than Raymarine, just a personal feeling, but i think Raymarine have improved in that respect. I do still prefer Garmin, but the Axiom software does seem better then previous versions.
