Hi everyone,
I'm new here and this is my first post. I did search to see if there was an answer to my question and couldn't find one.
I am happy to be pointed in the right direction if I missed it...

I need a "Trip Computer" for my boat. I like the simplicity of the one in the Garmin 72H -

(plus, I have a 72H spare)

What I'd like to know (before I go and buy a cable) is this:

Can I set up the 72H so it turns on whenever external power is applied, and then off when it is removed?
I'd like not to have to "remember" to start the trip.

Is this possible??

Thanks heaps!

Thanks, oldsalt.

Do I need to do anything, or will it just work?
I assume I will need to take the batteries out of it, so it is ONLY running on external power?

Cheers and have a happy day!

Hi Fantasie 19,
I see you are in Chichester.
Nice spot.
I did a bit of sailing out of the Solent, in a friend's Hustler 30, while I was living in Hastings.
LOVED The Folly Inn....
Had some fun when the screws holding the tiller on broke (work-hardened heads that just snapped off) in Bembridge, on Good Friday...
Fun times!

Thanks, oldsalt.

I have the same and it just works by default. I am sure that there is an option on the menu to change it but I have never used it. I leave the batteries in al the time.

Thanks for that, oldsalt.

I purchased the power adapter (genuine Garmin) that goes into the cigarette lighter socket and into the 4-pin in the rear of the 72H.
Plugged it in and the green LED lit up, but the Garmin didn't.

Pressed the red button and it started fine.
I was running firmware 2.7 and 2.8 was available. Updated to 2.8 and restarted.

Still doesn't come on when external power is applied, whether the batteries are in or not.

Do you have any other devices connected to the 72H? Are you ONLY providing POWER to the 72H, or is there anything else using that cable?

I was wondering if the data connection (from the other 2 pins on the 4-pin power/data cable) might be performing the "wake up" function, rather than the 72H waking up because power was applied???

Had a quick run through the menu and cannot see anything relating to power at all?
I'll have a better look once I have finished this post.

I'll get there....
