This set-up is going to work, and it's not hard
IF YOU ARE TESTING THIS WITH EasyGPS, DO NOT USE NMEA, DO NOT USE SPEED 4800, AND DO NOT EXPECT TO SEE A STREAM OF GPS DATA. As other posters point out, all of these work, but I suspect some of the posters have not taken note of the software with which you are testing this.
The set-up you have is identical to mine apart from the source of the cable. It is possible that the cable is faulty, but I have three from various motley sources, including one that was never intended for a GPS but I hacked its plug off and soldered a Garmin plug on. They all work fine.
You say in a previous posting that "the com port shows the driver is installed OK". If you can see something like:
"COM4 Prolific USB-to-serial Comm Port" in your devices, it is installed.
You are testing it with EasyGPS. I have EXACTLY THE SETUP YOU DESCRIBE WORKING THIS VERY INSTANT. I have made it work with different cables and several computers.
There are umpteen things you can set depending on the software that you use, but given that you are using Easy GPS, you want the protocol set to Garmin and the only speed available is 9600. This needs to be set both on the GPS and the computer (but they'll both set 9600 when you choose Garmin). You can do lots of other things with this configuration as indicated in sundry posts, but to get it to work with Easy GPS, USE THESE SETTINGS - it may be possible to get it to work on other settings but I have never succeeded. The procedure I outlined in my previous post works every time for me.
Use "get gps info" to see of you have connected to the GPS. EasyGPS is NOT a navigation program - testing with it you will NOT be able to see a stream of GPS data, and certainly not NMEA data. (All of these things are possible with your cable and your GPS - I do it all the time - but not in EasyGPS.)
I have made your physical setup work with:
EasyGPS
GPSW
MemoryMap At Sea
Maptech Offshore Navigator
Belfield
Imray Digital Charts
It works with both the NMEA and the Garmin protocol where they are supported.
I use the Garmin Protocol if it is available as none of my software does route transfer in NMEA.
