I have a Garmin GPS 128 on my boat. At the boat show I sought out and acquired a second power/data cable so that I could wire it up to the PC at home and load all my waypoints during the long cold winter evenings.

The cable is exactly the same as the one that came with the GPS itself... almost!

It has a moulded plug that locks in to the GPS on one end and seven bare wires on the other. The cable on the boat is labelled as follows:
Red: DC Input (fused)
Black: Ground
Blue: NMEA out
Brown: NMEA in
Yellow: Alarm Low
White: No Connection
Green: No Connection

The GPS Manual echoes the above.

The Accessory Cable is labelled exactly the same EXCEPT:
White is RS-232 in and
Green is RS-232 out

so... which do I wire to the DB9 plug to connect to the COM port on my computer - the NMEA pair or the RS-232 pair?

I thought NMEA was RS-232!

Advice and guidance welcomed.

Thanks

Ed

I can't help you but I know a man who can. Try the tech helpline at Garmin.com (?). A search under Garmin will give it. I found them very helpful and seem to remember a FAQ on connecting to a PC.
Hope this helps.

Send me an e mail david.bagshaw@ntlworld.com

I will send you 3 docs that detail how to connect a yeoman to a garmin and to a pc via 25 and 9 pin connectors,, which you can use by interpolation.

Have tried posting here but it scrubs the diagram.

I know it works as this is what I used for mine, garmin 128, toshiba lap top & a yoeman., I connect the garmin some times to the laptop, then swap plugs & connect to the yoeman
