Garmin 240 Fishfinder malfunction.

Any ideas what this means? All the depth settings have gone and it is flashing a dash, dash, dot, dash, which I believe is a Q.
Unfortunately I no longer have the instruction manual.

You should be able to download a manual from the Garmin website. Or ask them, they tend to be very helpful.
Or ask on a fishing site.

Occasionally this happens intermittently due to water turbulence / air around the transducer at speed, but in your case it looks like the transducer has failed or poor connection to it.
