There have been quite a few software updates for the garmin 176c chartplotter and now the website has 2 versions of the latest software.

What is the "BETA" version all about?

I have downloaded it and it runs fine but there are not as many headed menus, just more sub-menus.

Is the software supposed to be for the 176c or have they made a different version of the Hardware?
Has anyone else installed the new version and if so noticed any difference.good or not so good?

Thanks.

The latest BETA version is really good. BUT,, don't download it now, wait for the next one because they are fixing a load of faults that I have told them about and the new update will be available soon. As you have seen the menus are condensed into fewer tabs. You also get to choose how long the heading line is on the map page ie. It shows you where you are going to be in 5,10,15,,,, mins. You will also get a nice HSI style compass page.
Be sure to download the latest non-beta update before installing the latest beta one or else you will get the same problem I did, the Tide page will freeze the unit completly.
At the moment I seem to be the only 176C software tester/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

I am always wary of these updates as I hat to lose the info you have lovingly stored over time.

Well if you say the new Beta version is goood and the newer one better I will give it a go.

Thanks for the response guys,

I have downloaded the latest "BETA" version & are delighted with the results.
Nice to see the continued support from garmin.

I have heard that saddly the 176 has been discontinued, hope the 176c will be continued as it has been an excellent unit.

Just can't wait to splash the boat now to try it out.

Thanks
Andy

Can i just ask how you update the software -= I have plugged in the data cable and attached to RS232 to USB and it doesnt even register the 176c as connected to the PC?

Well you are in luck, an old person here..

I still have and use the slightly newer model Garmin 276c which I have had since 2006.. I use it on my motorbike and in marine mode on the boat. it's a brilliant bit of kit.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to make it talk to a PC via USB for quite a while [probably about 5-7 years] to update maps charts or transfer routes or tracks. I think the problem is that it uses a superseded USB 1 protocol and none of the more recent USB ports, hubs or adaptors speak that old protocol. Please let me know if you find a solution as I'd like to offload all my track history.

I have bought the more recent 276Cx which has USB2, Bluetooth and WiFi so my charts are current once again!

Did it - mapsource - all update to latest software from 2010 - its only for a tender for speed / depth readings - not main Nav system!!
Used a RS232 adapeter to USB off amazon - pence and downloaded latest garmin basecamp, then mapsource -
Garmin: BaseCamp Updates & Downloads
Garmin: MapSource Updates & Downloads
and mapsource found my 176c then used webupdater - all worked and you can download all your tracked routes to mapsource!
