When I switch on my hand held it beeps and says "internal battery low" . ? No this does not mean the
4 AA batteries. What it does mean rather annoyingly, is that each time I turn it off it due to
low internal battery, it defaults to interface garmin/garmin instead of NMEA/NMEA whhich I need
for the putor, and also it defaults to mph (instaed of knots). I have to change it back each time.

Damned if I can find an internal battery?

Clive, I think you'll find its internal Lithium battery has died which means it loses it's memory (I know how it feels). You'll have to find a Garmin service agent or maybe carefully pull it apart and assuming it's a standard one change it yourself. I think you'll find it's soldered in.

Depending on age, you can always send it back to Garmin in Romsey. They are without a doubt the company with the best aftersales service ever.

It amazes me how they never argue over anything, they just take your old unit and replace it with a new one.

If the unit is really old, they will replace it with the latest equivalent for a nominal fee.

I really can't praise them enough.

I do hear that the service from Garmin in excellent and I am sure they will replace it for free. I do however have to question the logic of having an inaccessible soldered battery. Its like some old computors used to have the CMOS battery soldered in instead of a little circular one like in a watch push fit.

Dont fancy sending it back to uk I'll have to see if there is an agent in Spain or Gib.
Thanks for the input Jim & Pistonbroke.

Hope all swell Jim give my regards to Becky Regards CGN
