GARMIN 128 DATUM

Having installed a Garmin 128 GPS to my Halcyon Clipper I would like to amend the WGS 84 Datum so that it agrees with my Imray chart for the Bristol Channel.
This would mean amending the Degrees North and West reading by a small fraction of minutes(as per the chart) on each axis so that the GPS agrees with my charts.
Is it possible to do this adjustment on the Garmin 128, if it is how do I go about it without causing problems to the unit ?

Hi,

The user manual gives instructions on how to set the datum. As I remember the datum is changes in user-setup but the manual will confirm this.

Why are you going about it that way? The Garmin 128 has almost every conceivable datum programed in. Your charts are most likely OSGB36 datum. (like all the waypoints in my latest (2000) almanac.). The difference...though not huge...might be enough to make the difference between hitting the barrier and going through the inshore passage. (sorry, talking the Solent in response to item in latest YM........ Anyway, given the conditions, I'd have gone through the forts.)

Look in the index of the manual for "Datum" and then change it from WGS84 to OSGB36.

If you don't have the manual, e-mail me and I'll look it up for you but it won't be until after the weekend as the manual is on the boat.

Good luck

Hit the "Page" button on the GPS until you come to the set-up option.
Select "Navigatiuon"
SCroll down to "Datum"
Hit "Enter"
Scroll down to the Datum specified on your charts
Hit "enter" again
Hit "Quit" until you're back to the page you want to use.

A word of caution - I'm pretty certain that the unit will always output the position on the interface as WGS84 irrespective of the datum selected and therefore displayed on the unit. This means that if you're sending to a ploitter or a PC, the position will still be received as WGS84. I'm pretty certain of this, but confirm in your manual.

well done, Dave. I couldn't remember since it is a while since I used the GPS in anger.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.
