Vidas has twin Gardner 6LW engines built 1963 with approx 3,500 hrs use
They both start well, tick over and run beautifully under load.
The problem is that the starboard engine cuts out nearly every time you put her into gear and under load
It's a combined throttle/gear control so you can't rev it out of gear.
If you push the lever forward(or reverse) quickly and up to 1/2 throttle she'll usually keep going up it a bit a a nuisance manoeuvring in the canal .
Any suggestions as to what I can do to rectify this?

Sounds like you have you have a governor issue. Load is being applied to engine and revs falling, however governor is not responding correctly.

As you are well aware Gardner employ their own governor and cambox with CAV injector body. I would start my making sure governor housing is full of oil and check for broken springs.

Not sure I understand your comments regarding not being able to rev engine out of gear. Need to know what gearbox you have, SCG, 2UC or later PRM??

It's a No 2 UC
Operated by Gardner single lever control " which enables the operation of the Reverse Gear and change of engine revolutions to be controlled by one lever"
That's what the manual states!
