With a sink that can be covered over, a hole in the middle of the cut out portion would be acceptable.

With a cavity underneath, rubbish could fall through and decay.

A cosmetically acceptable lifting ring seems to be the answer but any experience or recommendations would be very welcome.

Graham, unless I'm misreading the problem, it seems to me that the simplest and cheapest solution, (and most hygienic, if the cover also doubles as a chopping board), is a simple hole, with a regime of cleaning underneath when intending to leave for extended periods.

I have three cut-outs - one for the sink, one for the fridge and one over the vegetable sack. A hole would suffice for the first two (and avoids the cavity in most lifting ring arrangements) but crumbs and choppings in the third concern me.

Cut away (or simply lower a little) the support under one edge of the lid. Then when you press down on that edge, the opposite edge will rise up so you can get a hand under it.

For the fridge I will use one of the Solent Marine (Southco?) catches.

For the sink and the veg locker I will devise a push up rod activated from the galley front panel (push down on the outside, lifts up under the cut-out to allow fingers under).

Thanks for the suggestions and inspiration.

For thick cover boards just grind a dish shape into the top a then a small slot on each side or the dished area and insert a small round length od Stainless bar.

For thin boards, cut a hole and fit a plastic or similar material dish to underside and install a rod as above.

This was the method used in the first ice-cream trucks many moons ago.

Good luck and fair winds. :)
