Tried both yesterday and the £7.99 scraper removed a couple of layers much easier and quicker than the £55 sander.

I found the same with Kindred Spirit's extensive varnished areas, that I wanted to strip off and replace with oil.

Do make sure to change the blade as it gets blunt though, the effectiveness diminishes markedly.

Harris (brush fame) do a brilliant scraper with 4 edge blade easy to turn around/over and can be easily sharpened with a fine file. Its about 45mm wide. Work both pull and push directions. Cost about £6 with blades or extra blades couple quid for two, last for ages. I have a couple of handles have cut one down to 20mm wide for corners and difficult places. Best scraper I have ever had and I have had a lot.
Triangular model also Harris still useful if you keep it sharp. Key to success is sharp so need to learn how to keep the edge.

I have a collection of Skarsten scrapers (unfortunately no longer made but often available on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Skarsten-...es-/151213590492?ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:3160 ). These can easily be sharpened with a file and seem to take a sharper edge than tungsten carbide blades. Probably due to the formation of a burr.

This one is good too lasts well on tough materials, only problem is that replacement blades very expensive. Sometimes worth taking off corners of blade with file.

Carbide blades for that sort can be obtained cheaper from woodworking suppliers, they are electric plane blades. There are a couple of common types, slightly different dimensions and one is solid, one has fixing holes in it.
