Furlex 100s - how much resistance to expect?

Hi,
I have Furlex 100s on my Sadler 25 and around 13-14 square meters genoa on it. I can furl and unfurl by hand, but I need to use quite a force. Without sail, the furler works rather lightly. Is it normal that I need to use force to operate furler with sail (I never use winch), or it indicates that I need to inspect further?

Try lubricating it by injecting grease in the removable plugs. Give it a really good freshwater wash with a hose first and let dry.

We have a Furlex 100 on a Hartley 32 in Wellington NZ. Halyard tension is important, too much and it gets stiff to furl.

Try easing the halyard a bit if hauled up very tight. On a furling system the haliard does need to be as tight as a hanked on sail.

As well as easing the halyard, it helps to get into the habit of furling when turned away from the wind. I often see other boats struggling to furl their sail which is flapping for ages while I can furl mine in a fraction of the time just by bearing off and putting most of the sail behind the main.

If the feed rollers on the stanchions are knackered then that too will not help

Have a look at the top of the sail/forestay/halyard area. You may have halyard wrap.

Lay down on the deck with binoculars...if you can't see clearly from a pontoon..

Agree with all the comments plus check the alignment of the furling line as it leaves the drum. I have a 300 on about 40m square of sail and it furls by hand readily.

Thank you. I will investigate. The furling rope is old and tatty. Not sure about its leads. Also, halyard seems to be too tight. Also, I have probably nasty habit to furl in any course, will try now on the main shadow.

+1 for cleaning and greasing. They include grease with this model and I never used it, 7 years later it refused to furl. Dropped sail, clean, grease, worked like new. Thankfully the bearings are visible and easy to grease.
