Many people come on here and ask wether a fuel tank should be left near empty or full over the winter layup.

The census of opinion is=

Petrol tanks to be near empty.
Diesel tanks to be full.

CORRECT???

Now as you all know i have a petrol boat, and it currently has 1/2 tank of fuel in it(approx 120lts), So my plan this weekend is to try and use as much of it up as i can. To leave it near empty...

That was, Until somebody said to me yesterday NO NO NO, you don't want to be doing that!!! You want to leave the petrol tank FULL, to cut down condensation, But what about the petrol going off me says? Keep the tank full and put a fuel stableizer in with it...and you wont have any problems, they say!!!!

So a question from a confused 'Old Newbie',, Which is best for PETROL tanks?

Cheers in advanced.

Alistair..

BTW... Thanks tcm for recommending the Pela Pump, Got it yesterday and it looks a decent bit of kit.

Alistair - this largely depends on the type of tank. With my old speed boat, I had a plastic tank that I used to empty in the winter and then turn upside down with the cap off to dry thouroughly, which it did. Any bits in the tank come spring time could then be easily removed by shaking.

If your tank is a fitted metal one, you can choose. Leave it empty and run the risk of some condensation, which your filter/separator should pick up anyway, or fill it and add a stabiliser.

Diesel should be filled and stabilised.

My tank is a 250litre metal fitted tank away in the bottom of the boat, so no chance of turning it upside down to empty it..

I am trying to find out what is best for the boat..
