Fuel tank sender - advice?

My fuel tank sender has gone the way of all marine gear...

Can anyone advise on the best replacement - previous one was Volvo with the floating arm (which broke off when being extracted - great!) Is the tank top opening a standard size?

All exerience and pointers, gratefully received.

We have Wema fuel and water guages. The only one that seems to be reliable out of the six that we have is the grey water. We rely on the infallible dipstick for all others!

Peter - just had a similar problem, but mine turned out to be in the wiring - no power.

Forgive me for asking but, how do you know the sender has gone, and that it isnt the wiring, or the gauge?

You do not say what sort of tank it is.

Peter, ASAP have a decent range of tank senders; but you do need to know whether the display is euro or american. HTH

You're going to love my answer to your very proper question. I had all the lads with their micrometers pore over the setup - it's the ign switch, the cabling, the sender, the head...

The season approaches - I decided to chuck the lot out - it's done 11 seasons after all. In getting the sender out yesterday the bottom half sheared off as I wriggled it about. That decided me to get a different bit of gear if possible.

I was at the yard yesterday and I saw masts making off into the beautiful blue, and I'm stuck with the stink of diesel throughout the boat sitting on the hard....roll on!

I asked the question more for others than for you

When my fuel gauge went blank the other day, I posted on the MOA forum, for Moody specific info. The initial tests suggested it was either the gauge or sender, but that wasnt the answer I wanted - for obvious reasons. So I tested everything everywhere with my meter to isolate the problem, and thank goodness it was the wiring!!

For both my water and diesel tanks I went for for senders by this company

The output I use is 4 to 20mA current loop and one of the VDO water meters also is 4 to 20mA but there are several types for different types of gauges.

I got mine of ebay ... for about 25 quid - complete with gauge display and sender unit. It's universal so fits most tanks.
