Fuel tank leak

There is going to be a very long tail to this saga.....the diesel smell is not going to go away anytime soon...all the clothes and sheets etc etc are at home and have been washed multiple times...but the smell lingers...during the warm months I will start steaming everything (I have a powerful steam cleaner)...and airing everything out but it might be a long time before we sleep on the boat or invite guests

You are going to have to bite the bullet and flush your bilges out ( offshore) with things like Bilgex try the aerosol sprays for dog and cat smells on your upholstery and other soft furnishings.

I plan to do a lot of flushing with various concoctions...but not out to sea!!..I will pump everything out into containers and dispose of it ethically

I had to do something similar when I bought my last boat which had a careless owner that had allowed a lot of dirty oil and diesel to drain into a deep bilge and coated the sides of the bilge in slime smelly oil. It required several washes with a pressure washer and Bilgex and a biological digester to completely clean the bilge each one must have been tens of gallons of contaminated but emulsified water. I was used to going 20 miles offshore each weekend to dispose of it. The pet odour maskers did the job on all soft furnishings after a month or so there was no trace of diesel or manky auld boat smell.
If you put it into containers where do you plan to dispose of it?

I will take it to council disposal sites

I don't think you will have any joy there the regulations concerning the disposal of contaminated water and liquids are very onerous and disposal is costly with few treatment centres or landfills licensed to deal with such materials (ask me how I know that)

There used to be a place at the local déchèterie where you could drop off containers of liquid....although I haven’t been for a while

The liquids are in my experience small quantities of oil and paint from the DIY brigade turning up with several 25 L containers of contaminated water will not be met sympathetically, I suggest you exercise you French language skills and go and ask the guy in charge of the déchèterie if he will accept it you may be able to slip him €20 and he will then pour it down the drain when you have gone.

Landfill then or it'll be shipped to the far east where they'll dump it in the sea ? !

Landfill sites licensed to accept liquids are few and far between, read rare as rocking horse poo, the landfill taxes and therefor disposal costs are extremely high.

I will not do it by subterfuge ...... I will go with small quantities but many times

I bet if you pour amounts into a large shallow container in the sunny sun at home you can evaporate off all the water leaving very little to dispose of or burn

Neutradol carpet odour removing powder is cheap as chips , leave it everywhere in dishes .
not as sophisticated as enzyme bashing cat wee remover potions but ..@ Tesco prices of £1 a container , every little helps ?

I’ve been using baking soda so far...
I’ve had the mattresses airing outside for two months or more and they still smell
