Hi folks, just bought a fuel tank( bare tank ) for a mariner 3.3 hp outboard, as old one was leaking and attempt to repair didn’t work. So new tank is fine except for my cap off old tank doesn’t fit new tank ?? Any idea how to measure to get correct size , do I measure the neck size new tank

It's a new tank. Came bare tank. Old cap won't fit.
I would contact the supplier to start with. Normally the thread is measured but I suspect that outboard makers have there own special thread .....

In what way won't the old cap fit ?
Too big / small, if the diameter seems correct does the new tank have a lip that is stopping the cap fitting. Have you compared the old and new tanks ?

Yes I will contact the supplier. The old cap is too big for the new tank. !

Am I missing something? Why didn't you buy a new tank WITH a new cap?
They are supplied as separate parts

The parts lists show no variation in tank part number or in cap part number therefore it would be reasonable to assume that the original cap would fit the replacement tank.

However, I note that the part number quoted in the advertisement is not the same as the number I find in the parts lists.

Separate listing is irrelevant. Why not get a new cap, with new seal, to go with your new tank?

Yes indeed. You would naturally assume the original cap would fit. I have sent an email to the supplier and hopefully they will have a cap to fit the new tank.

Just doing a search, it would seem you can get a tank with cap from about £30 (non-oem), so if it costed you £69, I would consider sending it back and getting one of those, especially if you can't get the cap.

Yes. I went for that one because the supplier is listed as a marine shop. !
