Need to fill up for the first time and I am in Pwllheli. Are yachts in UK allowed red diesel, is this what the mariner sells and how much is it? Just to get an idea. Many thanks as always.:encouragement:

Lots of threads on this general subject; "proper" advice on RYA website, too.
Marinas in North Wales will sell red diesel based upon their exiting dispensing equipment. Do you have diesel heating on board? HMRC is happy to assume that you'll use 40% of your fuel to keep the crew warm and 60% to turn the prop. Taxed accordingly.
Marina owners aren't good at buying fuel. They have normally "just had to buy" at the top of the market and have plenty in reserve as prices falls. In other words, no difference to a car, expect to be screwed. Average about £1.40 for propulsion, about £1.20 for 60/40.

I thought the EU was taking the UK to court for yachts using red diesel VAT free? What a downer its full price.
It is not VAT free, charged at 5%. The EU is worried about reduced duty used for the "domestic" part of the fuel and the fact that the fuel is "red" ie a marked fue not allowed by EU rules foruse for pleasure boat use.l.

Just pull up to the fuel berth, give the office a shout, sign the paper 60/40 and give them your plastic. They give you an invoice with the tax paid on it. keep that for of you go continental. Thats it. Or you can do like some peeps do and get some red farm diesel, same as the marina sells you exactly, but no tax on it for about 80-90p a ltr. Some peeps carry it out to the piles and fill their tank. Once its in, no one can tell the difference. Rural garages sell it.

And that is why the EU has got the hump!!!

Strictly speaking their objection is that the fuel is red, not that it hasn't had tax paid. The system is in place for you to pay the full rate of tax on it if required, but the EU say this is not good enough, the fuel must be physically "white" or un-marked. However, the case has not been decided yet, so for now you will still be filling up with red as it's all you'll find on the water.

The tax issue is then slightly separate - both UK and EU are agreed that you must pay the tax on fuel used for propulsion, but need not on fuel used for heating or electricity generation. Obviously it could be a bit tricky to work out how much is used for each purpose, so with a nudge and a wink the UK authorities have let it be known that they will not question a split of 60/40 for propulsion/heating. Most fuel berths will charge this by default and just expect you to sign a form agreeing it.

They don't question 5/95 or 10/90 either unless you are a mobo. It is not up to the reseller to dictate to you the split however if he suspects you are up to something he can (should) report the details to HMRC. The reseller will have a contact number for such instances. If anyone here doubts this call your local HRMC office and get put through to whoever deals with derogated fuel. The reseller is only the reseller not HRMC nor the "authorities"
