Fuel / oil filter removal tool

Good luck trying to drill a socket extension! I'd spend a fiver myself rather than mess about.

Did if forget to all by tongue in cheek smiley.

Now you have just challenge me to drill a hole in a socket extension.

I agree at that price I would go for one but to ship to me would cost a lot more the the item costs.

You lot like spending money, just bash a screwdriver through it with a hammer and that will give enough leverage:)
Agree this is effective, if messy.
I find these the best tool. Gets the lid off the cursed Vetus primary water filter as well when used with a rag to protect the all-too-delicate plastic.

Late to this as only got to try this out this morning. Worked perfectly, the rubber handle grips the filter well and is east to fit/tighten one handed. £4 eBay.

I've got a few of the sockets as per Richard's set.
Bought to fit various motorbike oil filters, which tend to be recessed into the sump so you can't use a strap wrench easily.
By far the quickest and neatest solution, but sometimes 'equivalent' filters have a different pattern of flats on them.

Slip joint waterpump pliers are the easiest for me to use on my engine. They've come in handy for other purposes surprisingly often.
Very similar to the rather vicious looking slip joint filter pliers shown above by Quiddle.
