Fuel in Ionian

We are new to the Ionian coast of Greece. We need diesel, so where/how do we get it. There seem to be few places with fuel on the quay, and the fora suggest problems with quality. So I humbly ask, where do I get 'safe' diesel near igoumenitsa please?
 
Most town quays have fuel tankers visiting them these days, I would try Plataria or Sivota. Quite often there is a sign and a telephone number to call. Prices vary from 1.35 to 1.50 euro a litre, try to avoid marinas where the price can be even higher.
 
Not sure where you have read fuel quality issues, except in the marinas with floating bulk storage. The mini tankers invariably have good fuel because their turnover is so rapid. They refill from fuel station bunkers, with their own rapid turnover.

On most quays you will find a sign with a telephone number to call for fuel but the mini tankers often cruise around on the chance of a sale.
 
If you are any where near a Marina that has a fleet of Charter Yachts and also a good live aboard community such as LEFKAS. Then you will find that the fuel is very good due to the high turn over.

The fuel in Gouvia has a very high turnover, never had any problems with "Bug" there and not heard of any, 1.51 a litre.
 
Gouvia was 1.5 euro per liter in the beginning of June. I fueled up at Sami for 1.42 / liter in Sami a few weeks ago. One thing though, if you are going to fuel from a mini-tanker, make sure to look at the beginning fuel reading and ending reading. I didn't and am not sure how I needed so many liters. It seemed like about 50 too many. It may have been right, but no way to know with out getting the first reading.

I've fueled several times in the Ionian and the diesel is very good.

Bob Newbury of this forum had 50% water delivered to him from that marina!!!

My vote would be to avoid the marinas. Prevesa town was the cheapest fill up we had this year by far.

Always use the tankers. (IMHO)

It was the same as road fuel €1.40 in June

I would not take that amount of this bio fuel on board - nearly 10% vedgy oil. In just 2 years its amazing what **** drops out in the form of a horrible brown tar in my tanks. Shelf life is about 3 months!!! Leave your tanks as empty as you dare....
 
Colin come up to Montenegro,think it's about 70c duty free,would be good to see you again.Megan is there now if you need to confirm price.The big boys often take on 150,000 litres or more!Saving pays for the private jet I suppose.Sorry to hear the sad news about Lynns son,thanks for letting us know.Best MP.
 
If you find yourself needing fuel south of the Lefkas canal I would highly recommend George in Sami on Kefalonia. He has a small tanker, Jetoil on the side, and his phone number is 6946158936.
He is usually around the town quay most days and offers a great service. He is happy for you to look at a sample of fuel in a bottle, look in his tanker, he insists you look at the gauge to see it starts on zero and check to see where it stops. We have topped up with 100 litres at a time on three occasions now and each time have found him to be reliable, honest and cheerful, he has a wicked sense of humour and dealing with him is a pleasure!
Lofticus uses a filter which slows the process a bit but George is quite happy with that and understands our caution.
When you find a good reliable source of an essential product I thought it was worth a post here. :)

A year or so since we were in the area, but assuming not significant changes, if you're up Corfu way, sail the 8 or 10M up to Sareda in Albania (not if it's blowing southerly) for a few nights; the saving on buying diesel alone will more than cover the cost of your visa/mooring fees and it's a top spot to visit.

I would second your glowing recommendation on George. He was the one who fueled us. He didn't show the beginning reading though and I should have looked so I didn't wonder how come we needed so many liters. In any case, he is a good guy and pretty easy to find.

The price in Montenegro is .75 as of a month ago. BTW, we were right across from you this summer for three days. I fixed your speaker for Megan. Love your boat, its a real piece of art. Tell Megan the crew of Palarran say hello.
 
I would like to head up that way, but I have been told that once you pay for the agent, cruising fees etc etc, it makes the fuel rather more expensive, unless of course you are staying there. Give our love to Megan when you talk to her and we will catch up, I promise!! Take care mate!

We were 85c a litre tax free & 120 euro for a 1 week cruising permit. If you stay at Porto Montenegro the marina will do your check in and out negating the need for an agent. Shout Louise for the details if your interested .

Even with a the permit and a couple of nights in Montenegro it would be a 1000 euro's cheaper than Greece!!!!!
