Firstly thank you to Paul , Latestarter1, for the information sent a few months back regarding filtration and protecting common rail diesel engines from contaminated fuel.

I have twin Volvo Penta D4 260 hp Engines. I plan to install a first line of defence fleetguard 20/30 micron filter leading on to Fleetguard FS1015 Stratapore 10

micron filter with Water Sensors fitted to the bowls then onto the standard on-engine Volvo fuel filters.

My question is can Paul or anyone recommend a correct 20/30 micron filter and head to suit my D4 engines?

Many Thanks

Hi Keith, what boat do you have, and what model or make is the existing pre filter.

Hi Paul

The boat is a Sealine S38. The pre filters at present are Racor 3201T . The only water sensors are on the engine filters which i understand to be a bit late once water has

accumulated .

In past years of common rail Volvo engines sealine were the only builder I have come across to fit poor quality pre filters to there boats, one of which only had the old style cav tractor type filter with cross land 522 elements in.

I'd fit the racor fg500 with a 10 micron element in, that way its very simple to change in a sea way, just undo the t handle pull out the unit and fit another after draining any water out that you can see in the clear bowl at the bottom . If your on inland waterways then you have to spec the alloy bowl as its classed as a fire hazard. Your engine filer should then take over for the minute particles of dirt as its 2 micron filtration.

I take it the old one has an element that you have to unscrew from its head and base bowl?

Just googled 3201t its a simple screw on element that you cannot see the build up, you can use the existing head and fit a fleet guard fs1212 with a clear plastic bowl, for my boat I'd have the racor any day, even the separ units with the 4 8 or 10mmm head bolts are a pain and you do get air leaks as the flat square section seals fail after a few years of being crushed.

FS1212 sounds good Paul. Thanks for info. Do you know if there is a seperate feed in the bottom of the bowl to take a water sensor.

ASAP Supplies do supply a fuel water sensor gauge and sensor complete.

You have a water sensor already, not sure if you can it an additional one to join volvos evc system, or are you taking about fitting a stand alone system to your new pre filters.

I do have some spare plastic bowls for the fs1212 filters as I did have them on my princess and kept a spare set ready for screwing on . I then went over to a very mush cheaper Baldwin that's exactly the same as the fleet guard but shorter spin on with a drain for the water and debris.

I'd jsu treat yourself to a nice set of racors.

Hi Paul

I am afraid that I think of Racors as 1950's technology as well failing to meet J1985 or J1488 filtration standards, for me it is always simple spin on with the benefit of Statapore agglomeration technology always gets my vote for common rail.

Baldwin is perfectly good and Donaldson have some nice twist and drain equivalents with clear bowl. Fleetguard FS1015B is same thread as FS1212 but comes with large clear bowl with drain and I think tapping for WIF sensor. After you purchase first FS1015B you subsequently purchase FS1015 which comes less the clear bowl.

As usual VP go down their own route, the WIF sensor is not compatible with Racor or Fleetguard filters WIF sensors, threads different as well as signal value so the Italian WIF sensor used by VP will not fit into Racor or Fleetguard tapping. Ho hum.

Hi Volvopaul

Yes i was thinking of fitting a stand alone WIF sensor and gauge into the FS1015 pre - filter. ASAP supplies list a kit

that will fit directly into the clear bowl. As Latestarter1 (paul) has said before it seems a bit late to only have a WIF

sensor on the last chance engine fuel filter.

Many thanks for all the excellent advice as always
