Fuel filter funnel

Are these any good ? I think some claim to filter down to 0.05 micron.
I have a few gallons of fuel that may be worth saving and I suppose it would be, at least, a first line of defence if one had to fill up from cans.
Is it difficult to clean out the filters? Any recommendations as to best choice?

I got one to those some years back and never got any fuel through it. Ended up making up a pipe with an outboard priming bulb and a standard in line fuel filter to retrieve dirty fuel. late I replaced the priming bulb with a jabsco gear pump which was a lot quicker
 
I've got a Baja filter funnel. Two stages plus a water block. I always use it as one can't tell how clean the supplies are. When were the storage tanks filled? What state of fill level? etc,etc.

Only bore is it means refulleing is desperately slow.
 
I tried the yellow one that does mega filtering.It is very slow when filling from the pump so went back to the tights over a funnel.

Wouldn't want to do more than 20 litres or so. They don't hold that much and you would be standing with the can for hours.
 
My dad bought a filter funnel for the boat; the guy on the fuel barge refused to let us fill up using it, saying it would take too long.

I always refill through jerrycans, which are then poured through the funnel and inside the main tank, often 100 liters at a time and never found it exceedingly slow. If the jerrycan has a normal (2-3cm) spigot then the speed of fuel outside the jerrycan is basically the same as the speed through the funnel.

Fwiw, should it break I would definitely get a second one.



btw, usual fuel filters are rated at 30-10-5-2 micron, a claim of 0.05 micron filtering for the funnel seems excessive :)

If it is slow means your fuel is dirty. Mine moves diesel at an acceptable rate. It tends to slow down (especially nearing the bottom of the jerry can {guess why}).

A quick wipe of the mesh with a clean cloth and you are back to normal speed until....

That is exactly what I do and have never filled directly from a pump since I bought the boat in 2004. Never had a fuel problems. Check the inside of the tank each year when its out of the water- clean as a whistle. In the sort of rough conditions we have had over the years the last thing I want on my mind is to be worrying about crud in the fuel being stirred up.

BTW I do have 2nd one as a spare!

The annoying thing is that the water trap holds an appreciable amount of diesel which you need to store until you can find somewhere to throw it away.

I have an empty 5l engine oil plastic container where I throw the remaining cupful of dirty diesel, but also wastes of acetone, paint thinner, etc: whenever you need a cleaning agent (say for winch gears, or whatever) there is hardly a better liquid :D

I used to use a funnel with a flexible neck which also had a built in mesh filter when filling from jerry cans but it blew overboard just outside Milford Haven marina lock when in use and has never been seen again.

IIRC the Baja is (certainly was) about 200USD


there is a test made from Practical Sailor where the yellow filter comes out basically at the same level as the Baja, it is branded in the US as MrFunnel if I am not wrong, it is the same model sold in Europe under another name

May be wrong, but I think that the Baja filter is no longer available, certainly their website is no longer in use, and the various stickists list it as no longer available.
Search Mr Funnel Fuel Filter on ebay and you'll see plenty, ranging in price from about £12 to 50 depending on flow rate

I personally have this one, the biggish one, I think at least for Mr Funnel brand the yellow ones are for diesel, the black ones for petrol as they can be grounded IIRC, but other makes may have different colours

just noticed, it says filtration to 149 micron
 
I use one of these all the time. You need the largest you can use in the filler as size is proportional to flow rate.

I used it to filter 160 litres of badly bugged fuel after I took over my boat, and that plus fuel set cleaned it up perfectly.

It will also highlight water in the fuel,
