I have just bought a fuel meter and used it for the first time today. I was slightly shocked to see that having done just 18 nm I had used 54.9 litres of petrol. The engine in my boat is a single 150hp Volvo and the boat weighs about 3 tons. Is this excesive bearing in mind my total trip took around 3 hours including down and up the Beaulieu river at 5 kts and up to the Folley Inn at about 5 kts.

No more excesive than without the fuel meter. Though I would have thought it's purchase would have increased costs. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Seems about right. 1.5 mpg. Virtually all boats tested seem to do 1 - 2 mpg.

As I remarked in an earlier post, we seem to be doing something wrong (15 hp /100 ft/9 kt ancient Greek galleys). and if the designers don't address the problem soon, we will all end up as raggies !

What I find funny is the original spec said 150 miles on a tank of 158 litres. Now I know about poetic licence but my results are so different.

As for the fuel meter I did find by shutting down a little and reducing the speed by maybe 1 knt the fuel consumpsion went down dramatically.

I'd suggest that you make the best use of the fuel meter to find your most economical cruising speed. Other than that throw it away or it will just upset you.

All that's happend is you now know how much it's costing you per trip! I'd take it back and just be oblivious too the pain[wink}
