Bits of fresh water might not get frozen when others areas are frozen due to biogenic action warming it ever so slightly. Here in Western Siberia, we occasionally find bits of swamp wont freeze and we cant therefore build drilling pads in the winter. This is down to that particular bit of area being more active than the bit of swamp next door which is frozen to a meter or so depth.
Just reading 'Addicted to Adventure' about a Westerly Discus that sails in the ice of Greenland and the Antarctic and the author makes a few comments about how resilient GRP is to ice, even after many miles and hours of motoring through brash ice. The book is full of many nuggets of practical advice from real and often repeated experience, this being one of them.
