I know it sounds like some sort of HOLIDAY CLUB , but I'd be very interested in any info or photo's of the FROLIC 18 that was made in the early 1980's ..quite a rare Trailer Sailer LOA 18ft 8" with a huge beam of 8 ft !!!

Folic 18 ?

Frolic 18

We have a Frolic 18 which we bought last November and brought from Medway to SW France (by road). We have not launched her yet but intend mooring her on Lake Vassiviere. See www.lelacdevassivier.fr , it's worth a look. We cannot understand why the design didn't catch on as it seems to have much to recommend it as far as space goes. We don't think that she will win any races but the 8ft beam does not detract from a pleasant line from all angles. It was not a cheap boat when new (in excess of £5000 in 1983) we have reviews from two magazines but no user manuals or other bumph.

Indeed I do.

I had not seen this thread before because the most recent post pre dates me buying the boat, and pre dates me finding and registering on this forum.

There's a few pictures of my boat in my profile, and also a few more here: http://www.caleyboats.co.uk/302/Sail-Craft-for-Sale/Frolic-18-Built-in-1983-By-Mar still on the brokers website even though it's 6 months since we bought her

She's still at home on the trailer, will probably be going back in about April. We had her in the water for a few weeks trial at the end of last season, which was useful as it told us a few things we needed doing, most of which are now done.

Searching the internet for "Frolic 18" does not reveal much about boats (put plenty else!!!) though what I have found is there is a battery powered river boat in current production under the name "Frolic 18" and there also appears to be an old steam launch under the same name.

Likewise searching for Martin Creasey, the original builder of the Frolic 18 reveals very little.

Ours is the lift keel version. When we were looking for a boat, I wanted one that would settle on the mud, so either a lifer or a bilge keel would have done, and this was what was available. The keel box takes a big chunk out of the cabin, forcing a permenant fixed table but otherwise I don't think there's much difference between them.

I hope we will get to have some short breaks on her as well as day sailing her. I'm under no illusions, the accommodation is basic, but it's a small boat. I liken it to a basic campervan. I think any overnight stop needs to be near a pub or restaurant as the "galley" is not really up to cooking a proper meal. Fine for brewing a morning cup of tea.

Ours has a "heads cupboard" containing a porta potti with a curtain for a modicum of privacy. That's pretty good for a boat this size as most if they have anything, it's just a porta potti under one of the berths, usually the vee berth up front, with no privacy whatsoever. In fact this was one of the features that made us decide to buy this particular boat as that was as good as it would get on a small boat like this.

I've only seen two others advertised for sale since we bought ours, so there can't have been that many built.

I have a photocopy of two reviews from Practical Boat Owner (unknown date) and Yacht and Boat Owner, September 1992 as well as a black and white photocopy of at least part of the original brochure.

There's a couple more reviews to buy and download here http://marinedirectory.ybw.com/reprints/results_related.jsp?tem=ybw&id=81961 but I don't know if they are the same as the ones I already have.

My boat was bought originally in January 1982 and came to Scotland straight away. I have a copy of the receipt for the £500 deposit, but don't know the full price paid, or whether it was bought as a complete boat, or for DIY fit out.

The present sails on her have no numbers, but there is a very tatty old main and jib in a bag that might be the originals and that main does have a sail number 32. So if that is the original main, I guess it means at least 32 of them were made.

I have one too, I took it in part exchange for my 28ft Colvic Sea Rover, though sound it has been neglected and I am in the process of painting the bilges and cabin. It has a bilge keel and is as wide as the Colvic.
If you are down the South Coast anytime (Thorney Island) you are welcome to have a look.
