"Friends of the Earth." pass on by.

Is there such a thing as a vicious, environmentally unfriendly, extremely poisonous type of anti-fouling that’s not sold in chandlers but would do a much better job of exterminating all those little barnacles, tube worms and green weedy organisms that like to congregate underneath my boat?

(I'm just asking....................before I get bombarded by outraged greens.)

My boat came from Florida and the stuff they put on before it left ensured no growth at all, worms weed anything. Supurb! E-mailed dealer for the make and if can't source over here will pick some up later in the year.

If you find out more Andrew please let me know, we are having to lift out and pressure

Well I put Polymarine Crystal Clear antifouling (400ml spray can), specially formulated for outboard engine legs, stern drives, sail drives and bow thrusters, on my leg in April and it is still as clean as new. BUT I have heard today from another forum member who was getting some today that it has been withdrawn from sale as it was causing some problem with the environment, although really effective /forums/images/icons/wink.gif All the stores were informed to destroy it immediately. Now I am in a very difficult position, do I have this evil stuff taken off my sparkling leg and some namby pamby weak replacement put on, or do I leave it?

I'd have a go at making your own if I were you. They seem to have banned anything that actualy kills things. Start off with some Woolworths emulsion as a base. I've got some creosote left from before they banned that, so that should be good. Mix in some path weed killer. On second thoughts that dont work any more. Stick some diesel in, that seems to kill most things that I spill it on. Empty in a few fly spray cans and a bottle of soltron for good measure. Stir vigourously and apply.../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

I had to be pressure washed, my drive got replaced this season and normal UK stuff put on. Its crap, boats been in the water for 4 months and the drive is covered in worm things hence the clean also hull slimed all over and speed well down. Will let you know the make, person I need to speak to is on vacation. But this stuff was superb believe me.

You need stuff containing TBT Tetrabutyl Tin but it's becoming banned cos of the damage to the environment. Just like the recent ban on pesticides so folks if Europe continue then it's weeds in the garden and barnicles on your boat. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I heard of a fisherman who put an eggcupful of 2-4-5-T into his tin of antifouling , but cant verify it as he recently died of cancer.

Re: withdrawn because

met a retired swedish gynaecologist(?) once, and he had even worse problems because the tree huggers up there had even banned the ineffective antifoul we still have. so he liberated some tetracyclene antibiotic from their health service and mixed that in with the antifoul he was allowed. absolutely nothing grew on his hull.

so if you work for the nhs, there's your answer.

true story!

Pesticides are linked to Cancer and infertility!

If you can alternate between salt water and fresh water I have found normal antifouling effective. The salt water weed etc. dies in fresh water.

So, you reacon that antifouling could be used as a contraceptive. Do I just paint it on. One coat or two?? And do I need to rub it down first!!..../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: \"Friends of the Earth.\" pass on by.

I work in the agricultural pesticide industry and remember a product based on TRI-BUTYL-TIN (TBT), it was very effective but was banned in the UK some years ago because of its lack of selectivity (it affected too many other marine life forms ) . I am sure that it will be available somewhere in the world so try a web search, or ask discreetly at one of the older and less tidy boat yards- they may still have a few cans at the back of a shed.
