fridge kn@ckered - long life food suggestions?

Apparently booze isn't possible for reasons of lacking ice. Mrs Robin will explain. As for tinned food - I give my little dog a tin every day and I'd like to do just a tiny bit better. I know I'm fussy.

As anyone who has ever tried to a G&T without the glass full of ice will know. Not having a fridge is one of the main reasons our boat runs dry.

Re: Long term fridgeless perishables onboard..

If you happen upon a copy of Annie Hills old book 'Voyaging on a small income',still available at Amazon or ebay, there is a really excellent section on provisioning and the keeping of appropriate veggies etc without fridge.

And dont forget those spicy saussages that you just hang up in the galley and slice off as and when, oogh argh ,Salty dog sailing !

My thanks too for the really useful suggestions. I am so pleased now to be sailing without a fridge, and not being a slave to the boat's batteries.
I'm afraid booze doesn't get a chance to keep for ever though; and as to tinned foods - tell that to the tin of baked beans which exploded in the warmth of the kitchen cupboard at home when I destored the boat last October!

Try long-life skimmed milk. Last ages.
Yes, I know you're probably thinking 'yuch' but with the skimmed version, that horribly sickly taste of ordinary sterilised milk is much moderated, so it's almost like normal milk. Or maybe my taste buds are knackered.

Re: pulses

Mine's fine thank you ~ 70 bpm, BP 95/70 /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif How's yours these days? - Mine is bound to go up though when the next round of marina fees come in, then there is the lift out, anti fouling, new anodes, new prop, etc .... oooh, I can feel it rising already just thinking about the bills - now where did I put my "happy" pills? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: pulses

Settled now, only one death attributable to me yesterday and that was a gull that opted to to land on the road right in front of my car as I was doing 30!

Re: pulses

Much damage to the car?
Smacked a gull one day while toddling down the road in a van - Damn gull went through the grill and took out the rad - mind you I was doing a wee tad over 30 at the time /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Re: pulses

Fresh meat then?

Don't you find sea gull tends to taste a bit fishy though?

Anything in a tins lasts 30 years
dried food, pasta, noodles, rice, smash, couscous lasts 5 years

If youre trekking across the sahara, take expensive SAS meals... If youre on a boat, just take tins!
