Fretting a bit about security - what are your thoughts?

I have told my oppo Shot Colin that statistically, Bequia must be the safest place for him on the planet now as he is really unlikely to be shot there twice.

Under no circumstances cary a firearm. When the pirogue comes at you they will have three or four men in it each carrying an AK47 or equivalent and at least one machete for close in work. Don't in any way aggravate them and let them take what they want. Leave some money in a place easily seen and hide the rest. Bear in mind they are used to shooting from a moving boat you are not.

Read recently on another forum a goood number of reccomendations for proximity alarms/lighting/flares/radio combo as an effective strategy to feel secure - just tried to find it again but it's after wine o'clock and it's not particularly forthcoming. But, to reduce paperwork headaches, that is the route I will probably go down.

Just wondering though, when was it we decided to stop fighting against people who set out to do us wrong, regardless of the cost to ourselves or our family? When did it become acceptable to think it's better to do as we're told when faced with threat, rather than fight tooth and nail?
