French Yacht sinking

It's Cheminées Pousoulat, it was perviously rescued off the Azores after taking in water in the same race and they set off an ERPIB at that time. The MRCC report is interesting http://hmcoastguard.blogspot.co.uk

This is the first example of how the replacement of the Sea Kings has put lives in danger. The Sea Kings has a range of more than 200 miles more than their replacements, this would have allowed the helicopter to stay on station longer. If it was not for the Star Isfjord these men could have perished as a result of the decision not to keep the Sea

According to Wikipedia, the Sea King has a range of 1000km and the Sikorsky 92 has a range of 999km.

I'm not certain, but I thought the new helicopters (the large ones, they've bought two types for different bases) had longer range than the Seakings? Perhaps those Wikipedia figures are measured in different ways (with / without a reserve, etc) ? Or we have a variant with larger tanks (I'm sure there are lots of options) ?

I'm pretty sure the Sea Kings at Culdrose haven't been replaced yet.

One went past the window the other day so still flying.

In 1990's my production manager's husband was aircrew on SAR Culdrose, they operated well 200 mile out back then. I remember at least once he landed in Ireland with dry tanks to re-fuel, and once come back with one engine.

Back then aircrew were Navy divers, they would jump from anything below 60 foot, Marty jumped twice into Porthleven to try and rescue driver from a car that had driven over the edge. Will the new ones be the same with diver ?

Well according to Wikipedia (I did check first before positing) the Sea King is shown as having a range of 764miles and the S92 as 539 miles. Perhaps the actual models in use are different specifications in which case I stand corrected.

The RN website gives the Sea Kings range as 320nm. I guess they factor in that the thing has to get there and back, where as Wiki might be stating maximum A to B range.
