That's a big question - there's about 8,000 kms of waterways in France! You could try Eurocanals: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/eurocanals/ for an online starter. I think you need to narrow down your area of search a bit: what area of France are you thinking about? I'm based at St Jean de Losne because it is more or less in the middle and you have half a dozen cruising choices. Also they look after the boat for me, winterizing etc, and do odd jobs. but there are lots of other options.
Hi, two books I can recommend:
#1 Through the French Canals by David Jeffery (Pub. Adlard Coles)
#2 Inland Waterways of France by David Edwards-May (Pub. Imray)
Both pretty good but #1 more readable. Also the Navicarte Guides but these are pretty unreliable.
Thanks for the book suggestions guys, and for the link Saskia - yes locality is broad because I'm pretty flexible as I plan to do some extensive trips so could locate anywhere. Reasoble cost, services on site, friendly people and available berths are the criteria. Central sounds good so any names of places with space would be helpful. Hopefully one of the books may have lists of contacts at the back.
yes the second book I mentioned has all phone numbers etc.
I think you will find availabilty is pretty good except for places like Paris. We recently took our boat down through canal from Le Havre to Marseille and frequently left the boat there to return home, never had a problem, finding space, even July/August. Very cheap compared to coastal marinas. good luck
