freestanding table help

my main cabin carpet is about to be replaced with teak and holly to make it clean (and look how in my mind a boat should look)

At the same time I'm going to make the table freestanding instead of re bolting it to the floor.

So I need to screw the existing base to a bigger, wider base with some weight in it. It will have rubber on the bottom to stop it sliding about.

Question is how big does the base need to be and how heavy? I know S42s have freestanding tables so one of those would be a good template. Anyone else with freestanding tables got suggestions/comments? Do freestanding tables need to be secured at sea?
BTW I'm no fair weather sailor, so it does need to be stable.

Suggestion: Freestanding table at sea does not work !!! (We have one and is a pain)

Options are;

1) Base wider than table, with significant weight ...our base is big & heavy at 15 Kg and , but not enough
2) Crew member assigned to table holding duties (Not popular)
3) Find a way to secure at sea

absolultley agree with divemaster. Our table is free standing and we have to wedge it in all sorts of ways when at sea or it just walks around on its own. Real pain, wish we could bolt it down easily

I have had a free standing table on the last two boats.

Bad weather stow it away.

good weather leave it out.

My coffee table does not move in any weather, though the dining table is fixed. Could do with a new coffee table, if only I could fing one to match.

Not ideal but how about a couple of nice shiney threaded stainless sockets fitted flush at cabin floor level?

to secure under way - cut a sheet of that non slip netting stuff the size of the table and turn the table upside down onto it. no good if table has fiddle rail of course

My 800 square cockpit table has a base 700x500, obviously with the larger dimension going across the boat.

thanks all really helpful ideas and information.

I think I'll copy those base dimensions and either have a bolt down system or two eyes and a bungee for when the weather gets really rough. Inverting it a great idea!
